Hungarian Christmas from a Taiwanese point of view

It is my first time to celebrate Christmas in Europe. Thanks for Peter inviting us to his home and celebrate Christmas with his family. In fact, I didn't believe that people would put "real" presents under the Christmas tree before I came here. But now I realize that it's true. The best is that they will prepare presents for family in Christmas. The presents could be clothes, shoes, smart phone, furnishings, etc. I like Peter and his family because they let me feel what love is through their living. Christmas in Hungary is like Chinese New Year in Taiwan. It's just little difference between celebrations. I’m surprised that no any shop, market, even the transportation system open or operate in Christmas Eve. (Stores won't close during Chinese New Year in Taiwan.) I like such of this custom, although it is not convenience for someone. Anybody can go home and eat dinner with family. Peter's mom made a lot of food for Christmas Eve (salmon, goose liver with toast, etc). I like them so much I’ll never forget the day in my lifetime.

Semih ÇELİKOĞLU

Hello there, my name is Semih. I am from İzmir, Turkey and 34 years old. Most of you may think that what is this guy doing here at this age as a student. Well this is my 2nd university. There was no program like Erasmus when I was studying. So I couldn't miss that 2nd chance. I studied veterinary medicine before and worked as a vet for 9 years. I have never become a 9 to 5 person and was not totally satisfied with my job. So I quit it almost 2 years ago and here I am. Trying to show myself that everything is possible, it's never  too late. I am a vegan, nature lover,  camper, passionate cyclist and a good traveller. I like learning new languages, and reading ofcourse. I am also interested in simple living, tiny houses and permaculture. Ohh I was almost forgetting that I am really into drumming as well. I started learning it 2 years ago and am trying to practice everyday. I absolutely love it. I think that's enough for now. Looking forward to meeting you in Budapest.

Shaun-Paul Lopez

Dear Miss Julie Kiraly / Sir / Mdm,

My given name is Shaun-Paul Lopez and I am from the tropical island city state of Singapore. My coursemates call me "Shaun" and I am in Budapest for the ICC (International Coaching Course) in TF for 11 weeks (yes... only 11 weeks 😭), where I will be learning more about coaching and about my sport, Fencing. This is my first time living abroad and I am very excited to be here!

In Singapore, I run a fencing club and am a fencing coach. In my previous life ... I used to be a Substitute Teacher in a Secondary School (3 years) and then became a Flight Steward working for Singapore Airlines (also 3 years). All the flying and travelling I did in my previous job left in me a 'wanderlust'. So it's no wonder that I jumped at the chance to study here in Budapest when the application for the course came up.

As this is my first time living overseas, it is a perfect opportunity for me to learn more about other cultures and make friends from all around the world. I personally feel that one can never have too many friends!

It would be great if I am given a chance to join in any activities organised by the school or students in my free time with the hope of being able to bond with not only my coursemates but also the local Hungarians and other Erasmus students.

Thank you for taking the time to read my introduction.
Please let me know if this introduction and motivation is adequate or it needs reworking.☺

Yours Sincerely,

Shaun-Paul Lopez

Mr. Máté Rozmán

Dear Erasmus,

I would like to apply to the Mentor position what you advertise.

I chose the position because I would like to make new friendships with foreign people. I also would like to know their culture. I would like to learn a couple of term in their mother tongue and make connection in the near future.

Right now I have a B2 euroexam language exam but I would like to get a higher exam such as TOEFL. In my opinion this opportunity would help me to reach my goal.

I think about myself as a very open minded very friendly and patient person. Budapest has many opportunities and places to explore so I would like to have fun with my new friends

Yours Faithfully,
Mate Rozman

Cover Letter

Dear Erasmus Student,

I applied for this mentor program, because I would like to make new friendships and I'm very curious about how are these sport organizations work in foreign countries and I wonder what kind of education the sport managers get for example to improve. This program is a very good opportunity to use English every day.

Best wishes,
Peter Hill

Trip to Velence

Today, We went to lake Velence with Julie for fun, when we go to tram station, we just realize it‘s not working today, so we went to train station to take the bus, we late again. Taiwan is surrounded by the sea , so we can go beach anytime, it is easy for us to see the ocean. But here is surrounded by the land , so it isn't that simple to see the ocean here like TW. To my surprise , the lake was sea in here. But it doesn’t matter, I just lie down beside the lake and took sunbathe all day , although I can’t remember most of the people name , I chat with two turkish. They are stay here just for 2 month, it’s short.

Hi Guys and Gals!

My name is Kriszti, I study Human Kinesiology and I’ve been living in Budapest for almost 3 years. It is a vibrant and diverse city with awesome sights, spots and programs that are waiting for you to see day and night! :) Whatever your preferences, I’m sure there are lots of things for you, let it be sports, cultural programs or gigs and nightlife! We also organize Erasmus get togethers. These are also fun and diverse, lots of playing, showing off cooking skills or doing sports together. I won’t spoil more, you will see for yourself!

Hope to meet you all very soon!

Motivation letter

I am currently a student of the University of Physical Education in Budapest. I study Human Kinesiology and I am starting my last Bachelor’s year in September so I have been living in Budapest for 2,5 years now. I have also participated in an Erasmus exchange myself, where I had the chance to spend a semester in England. With this experience, I can state that I know how it feels to be a fresh face at a foreign environment.

I am applying for the Erasmus Mentor program this year again because I think it is a great way to meet foreign people and get to know different cultures. I really enjoyed being a mentor and helping students with whatever I could. Being new to a foreign city and university can be overwhelming at first and I would really like to help so that students can get the most out of their stay. I find the program very useful to practice English communication skills as well.

I find this program to be extremely fun all in all. It is not only exciting for the exchange students but for the mentors as well. It is a great way to express hospitality and show as much of the city, culture and life here as possible so that the students can return home with fulfilled dreams and lots of memories. From my past exchange experiences I know that friendships can be made for a lifetime during these stays. I also know how easy it is to get attached to a place, especially if people are surrounded with new friends and lots of activities. I truly think this is a great opportunity for both the newcomer and the receiving parties.

Thank you for considering my application. Looking forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully
Krisztina Belá

Being a mentor means to me...

n the last couple of months I have had the chance to experience the life of a mentor - I organised some programmes for incoming Erasmus team by myself, gave them useful information as fast as I could and finally, the most popular and maybe the most challenging task: I tried to translate from our „easy” language or vica versa. I have realised how important mentors' work is to integrate Erasmus students to a new country and help them. During their mobility, mentors also learn something great from students in return. Firstly, it was a big challange for me. I just saw different students from all around the world and I didn't know how to make them a close contact. But I started to spend my freetime with the incoming students - we went hiking together, I met them in bars in a couple of evenings- therefore I got the opportunity to get to know them better. During this time I realised that they are really great people who brought numerous sunny moments to my life. I found some friends in this group. Although they went home I still keep the contact, they became a part of my life and I'm sure that I will never forget them and the last half year. I would strongly recommend this opportunity for those who would like to get to know with people from different cultures and those who would also like to learn exciting things about these countries.

Being a mentor means to me...

Being a mentor means to me...

to get know students from all around the world, and host them at my university.
to get know Hungarian students with similar interest.
to practice foreign languages, and being international at home as well.
to translate delivery notifications by post and medical records.
to get help from a native English speaker, when I need it.
to explain and argue, that Hungary has real beaches.
to annoy foreign students why they still don't speak Hungarian.
to laugh at them, when they try to pronounce Hungarian words.
to learn a few words in a lot of languages, and be proud you know them.
to discuss what they think about Hungary, Budapest, our education system, and our university.
to talk about sport in their own countries.
to try foods from different countries, even if I'm at home.
to be jealous, and feeling nostalgic they have their Erasmus experience right now.
to keep in touch after their mobility.

Ms.Fanni Bajkor

I am writing to apply for being an Erasmus mentor, advised by a friend. I am thoroughly keen on collecting information in foreign countries and this kind of knowledge could help to navigate the other participants.
My name is Fanni Bajkor. I will begin my first year at university. I have been learning foreign languages for 13 years. First I started learning German. I have been pursuing rhythmic gymnastics since I was five and it became the significant part of my life, however now I aim at trying myself in other things.
I believe that I am suitable for this programme, because I am very enthusiastic, curious and purposeful. I am open-minded for other cultures, languages and the knowledge coming from these factors, and I am ready to try everything new with pleasure, not to mention that I love learning.
Last year I was a participant at the Erasmus+ program, which was a lifetime experience and I never have such a wonderful holiday.

I think after taking part in this programme, I will have a wider knowledge in many fields, including scientific, linguistic and personal areas. I completely aware of the hardships of learning in a foreign country, hence I will be your helpful partner.

Mr. Máté Takács

I decided to apply to be a mentor because I think it is really important to show the non-nationals what Budapest is famous for. There is plenty more to see than the Buda castle and Heroes Square. As a local who has been living in Buda for 23 years, I know the capital well. Speaking English is not a problem as I have passed the language exam years ago. Besides this, last semester I studied in Izmir, Turkey for half a year. When I was there, I remember the first day when we did some sightseeing. I was buzzing to see the city, but instead of getting the basic facts about Izmir, which is a really beautiful city, we got lost in the bazar because they were not prepared enough. Although we had fun, I did not get the information I wanted. I just wanted to say that I know how not to perform a sightseeing. When this happened I decided that if I am going to be a mentor, I must definitely do it much better because with a performance like that, I would not step on a stage.

Having spent time in Turkey, I am not saying that I speak fluent Turkish, but I understand them and the basic sentences, which can be a benefit, because Turkish students love coming to Hungary (since they think we are both the sons of Attila). Some of the Turk students told me they really wanted to come to Hungary as a student, which would give me an opportunity to meet them again. Although at times it was a little challenging, I found the whole experience both rewarding but extremely enjoyable.
